You Are Not Alone: About Our Project

In June 2012, the Provincial Advocate's Office launched You Are Not Alone (YANA).

A call out video was created that requested LGBTTQQ2SIA* youth to share their experiences

interacting with service providers and their ideas for how to improve things for queer

youth connected to Ontario's care systems.

Youth self identified as having lived experience in: Child Welfare, Children's Mental Health, Youth Justice, Provincial Schools for the Deaf, First Nations children and youth and those with

Special Needs.

The YANA project team traveled around the province attending youth conferences and collecting submissions. The team also presented workshops to service providers in Ontario.

We met many youth during our travels across Ontario and in 2013 the YANA Youth Advisory Group was formed. The group consists of 10 youth that identify as LGBTTQQI2SA and fall within the mandated areas listed above.

This group began working together to review submissions from the YANA project and make recommendations for real change.

It was evident to everyone in the working group (from the submissions) that there is an overwhelming need for allies amongst service providers.

"Be Our Ally" became the theme of this next phase of the project.
